Becoming a mentor does not require a special degree or set of skills.
All you need is a listening ear, a caring heart, and an open mind.
Mentors are listeners first and foremost.
Mentors offer friendship, guidance, acceptance and encouragement to young people.
To get started you must:
- Be at least 18-years old
- Complete our online application and background check*
- Commit to mentoring a minimum of one hour per week, during the school year
- Attend a mandatory 2-hour mentor orientation

- To complete background check:
- Go to www.gscs.org
- Click Menu, under Students & Families, scroll to and click on “Volunteer”
- Scroll to the bottom of the Volunteer & Mentor with GSCS page, until you see the Spalding Collaborative logo

Youth in mentoring relationships that lasted more than 12 months felt more confident about completing their schoolwork, skipped school less often, had higher grades, and had a lower rate of drug/alcohol use.

In addition to completing the online application (see above), you need to consent to a background check (see above) and attend a two-hour orientation training session (see dates listed on Schedule of Events Page). New mentor orientations are held monthly virtually or at a location to be announced. Advanced registration is required for new member orientation sessions. Registration links are found on the detail page of the Event. Additional trainings may be scheduled for groups of six or more. Contact the program coordinator for availability.
