GRIFFIN — Special visitors attended the Spalding County Collaborative Authority’s Educational Prosperity Initiative meeting last week.

Staff with the Griffin-Spalding County Library spoke at a Collaborative meeting recently about its summer programs.

The Griffin-Spalding Library is part of the Flint River Regional Library System — which also serves Butts, Fayette, Lamar, Monroe and Pike counties.

Youth Services Librarian Bea Mengel explained Summer Slide, which is the learning loss that takes place by children not engaging in academic activities during the summer.

She said some children are bored while others interact in fun activities.

Youths who do not participate in cultural or educational learning during the summer months can lose what was learned in the previous school year, Mengel said.

To encourage reading and to help children get involved in learning, the library offers a summer reading program accompanied by digital resource access.

“Oceans of Possibilities” is this year’s theme.
