Shoes needed to go in backpacks

The Shoes for Griffin Campaign is collecting new shoes for the children in Spalding County that benefit from the Backpack Food for Kids Program.

There are about 255 children in the program, which provides supplemental food over the weekend for those in risk of insufficient food while not in school. The goal is to place a pair of new shoes in each child’s backpack for Christmas as the children leave on the last day of school before break, said Joseph Walker, executive director of the Spalding Collaborative.

Walker is grateful for the donations so far, but approximately 100 pairs are still needed, he said Thursday, with the deadline for donations on Dec. 9. Field’s Foot and Ankle Clinic has partnered with the Spalding Collaborative to collect the new shoes for the second year now, Walker said.
Field’s Foot and Ankle Clinic, at 730 South 8th St., Griffin, has shoe sizes for each of the boys and girls enrolled in the program.

Donations of new shoes are being accepted there and cash or check donations can be made payable to the Spalding Collaborative, with acknowledgment for a tax deduction provided upon request.

“Our community is clearly excited and eager to see this project succeed,” Walker said. “We are grateful that Griffin’s Famous Footwear Shoes and Roses are offering discounts for purchases made for Shoes for Griffin.”
