Groups to partner for Holliday festival
July 2- This September, the Old West comes to downtown Griffin as community groups partner to remember one of Griffin’s most famous sons. The inaugural Mid Georgia Doc Holliday Festival will be held on September 26th and 27th. The free event is set to include musical performances, assorted food vendors, kid activities, a poker tournament, and the Doc Holliday BBQ Championship over Friday and Saturday. A full schedule of events will be available in the coming months.
“We’re extremely excited about this,” said Alvin Huff with the planning committee. “Not only does this event bring some of the state’s best BBQ cook teams to Griffin, we want to grow it over time into a full western themed experience to bring people to town to shop in our stores and stay in our hotels.”
When asked about naming the event after such rough figure as Doc Holliday, Huff added, “One of the worst myths is that Holliday was just another western gunslinger. That gunslinger image sells tickets to movies, but it isn’t accurate. What’s that mean? He had faults, but he wasn’t as bad as people assume. Remember, he was one of the “good guys” in the OK Corral shootout.”
Mid Georgia Doc Holliday Festival is a partnership between the Georgia Barbecue Association, Eagles Way Church, the City of Griffin, the Griffin Main Street Program, the Downtown Council, and the Griffin-Spalding Chamber of Commerce. For additional festival information, visit www.dochollidayfest.com. Vendors interested in participating in the event should contact the Griffin-Spalding Chamber of Commerce at 770-228-8200.
This will be downtown Griffin’s second Holliday named event this year. The fourth annual Doc Holliday Beer, Wine, and Arts Festival was held downtown this past May.
